No, Ray J, You Did Not Hit It First (But Your New Song Isn’t All Bad)

Standard

Ahem, how shall I begin?

Fact: According to Kim Kardashian’s Wikipedia page, she was married to music producer Damon Thomas from 2000 to 2004. After her (first) divorce, she dated R&B singer Ray J. Technically (barring any acute weirdness between the happy couple), Damon Thomas hit it first. Sorry, Ray J.

And here’s the rest of the story:

2003: Ray J makes a pornographic porn video (aka sex tape) with his then girlfriend, a certain Kim Kardashian. Sex tape leaks.

2007: Kim Kardashian’s mother sells sex tape to Vivid Entertainment for $1 million, sex tape is released under the title Kim Kardashian: Superstar.

Still 2007: Kim Kardashian changes her mind, claims ownership of the now very hot sex tape and sues Vivid Entertainment. Lawsuit is settled and Kim K is $5 million richer.

2008 – two days ago: Reality TV. Blah, blah, blah. Kris Humphries. Blah, blah. Ray J’s music career tanks, he dates older woman, older woman passes on. Blah. Kanye West ‘hits it’, Kim K gets pregnant.

Today: Ray J debuts new single, ‘I Hit It First’ (featuring Bobby Brackins) after taking over the Internet with the song’s cover art yesterday. References to Kim K and Kanye West abound.

In purely lyrical terms, the groovy Nic Nac-produced track is summed up by the first line of its hook: “She might move on to rappers and ball players, but we all know I hit it first…”

Bottom line: Ray J is a desperate man who needs to move on while he still can… but ‘I Hit It First’ isn’t a terrible song.

An alternative perspective: It’s kinda late, but if Kim K cashed in on her sex life with Ray J, can you blame Ray J for trying to cash out?
